You might think that because I am a travel doll, that I’m already “mobile friendly”. Actually, I’m talking about a responsive website. Hitty Travel Doll began in 2009 as a blog on Blogger.
Since we moved to a condo, my blog has been mostly forgotten. My adopted human, Shirley, seemed to think my Hitty Doll sisters and I no longer needed her attention. I understand…a little. Moving to a smaller space is disruptive. See my post Hitty Moves to a Condominium
Every time Shirley wanted to sew, she couldn’t find what she needed. When we took a recent trip, I wanted a new red dress. Shirley bought a fat quarter instead of searching for fabric she knew she had. She was going to buy snaps too until she saw that a package of 10 was $4! Seriously? She knew she had some somewhere. I had to make do with a safety pin.
Then, my other adopted human, David, retired after working since he was 16 years old. This is a great thing and Shirley was so happy he did. But now, every day seemed like a vacation or a weekend. Work? What is that?
These are what Amanda, adopted human of Hitty Amelia, calls First World Problems. We understand that, we really do, but they were challenges nevertheless.
Shirley felt like she was in a holding pattern until she listened to her pastor one Wednesday evening. He said that in order to accomplish anything, you must answer three questions:
What? How? Why?
After pondering this for a few weeks, Shirley finally had a plan. As you may know, Shirley has made doll clothes for many sizes of dolls most of her life. Before selling online, she sold at craft shows and locally at an antique mall.

Shirley has decided to keep small dolls like me and my Hitty Doll sisters and find new homes for the larger doll family members. Just this summer, David remodeled the kitchen and it now has a lot more space. Shirley has put this to good use. She doesn’t own too many dishes and pots and pans anymore.

Back to my website. Technology never slows down. Shirley realized that my old site was sadly out of date. Shirley made her first website in 1997 when she was a church secretary. In those days, you had to know how to code, or you could use a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) computer program like MS FrontPage.
When Blogger, Typepad and other platforms came along, having an online presence became so much easier.
But now, websites must be responsive. Your reader must be able to easily view the site on a desktop computer, a laptop, a tablet (such as an iPad) or a phone.
Frankly, Shirley wasn’t sure she was up to the task. After all, she is "senior citizen" and hadn’t done any computer work for years. But, her mother used to say, “Where there is a will, there is a way”
Her biggest fan, David, said, “Of course you can. Hop to it!”
Transferring the website from Blogger worked somewhat. The posts transferred but most of the graphics and photos didn’t. Thankfully, Shirley still had all the photos on a USB drive. The comments to the posts didn't transfer either. Shirley was sad to lose those.
All the posts had to be re-written and the entire website had to be re-configured. After weeks of research, reading and watching many YouTube videos, it is done. While I am editing the site, I can view how it will look on different devices.
She says she understands why old websites don’t get updated. It’s hours of tedious work. She understands why professionals who do it for a living make so much money. She says she wouldn’t do it again for her best friend, so don’t ask. LOL
